Choosing a Toilet for Your Space & Needs
Toilet Types
There are 5 types of toilets to choose from: One-Piece Toilets, Two-Piece Toilets, Wall-Hung Toilets, Back-to-Wall Toilets, and Smart Toilets.
- One-Piece Toilets: Seamless design where the bowl and tank are integrated. Easier to clean, looks modern, and avoids crevices where gunk hides. Best for anyone who wants a sleek look and minimal maintenance.
- Two-Piece Toilets: Classic setup, with a separate tank and bowl. Usually more affordable and easier to install or replace parts. A solid choice if cost or repairs are a concern.
- Wall-Hung Toilets: Wall-mounted with the tank hidden behind the wall. Maximizes floor space, gives a clean aesthetic, and makes floor cleaning a breeze. Ideal for small baths or minimalist design.
- Back-to-Wall Toilets: Tank or cistern concealed in a unit or vanity. Saves space and hides pipes, while keeping installation simpler than wall-hung. Great if you want neat lines without full wall cavity work.
- Smart Toilets: No visible tank; water connects directly to the bowl with a hidden system. Ultra-modern look, compact, and often has battery backup for flush. Good for contemporary or tight spaces.
Flush Types & Mechanisms
- Single Flush vs Dual Flush: Single flush has just one flush option, controlled by a handle, so the same amount of water is used with every flush. Dual flush has two buttons: light flush for liquids and full flush for solids, saving water without compromising performance.

Technical Toilet Details
Look for key specs that matter:
- Rough-in size: Must match your plumbing layout.
- Outlet type: Some bathrooms are designed for toilets with bottom or floor outlets, while others may need a toilet with a wall outlet.
- Toilet footprint: Measures the area where the outline of the toilet meets the floor. To find your toilet footprint, measure the size on the base of the toilet you are replacing.
Bidets
Swiss Madison offers 4 general bidet options:
- Classic Bidets: Separate fixture, traditional style. Works best if you have enough floor space.
- Bidet Attachments: Affordable, installs under an existing seat. Basic cleaning with manual pressure control.
- Smart Seat Bidets: Heated water, dryer, and remote or side-panel control. Convenient upgrade without replacing the toilet.
- Toilets with Built-In Bidets: All-in-one smart toilets with wash, drying, and extra features like night lights or auto flush. Most premium option.
Comfort & Design
- Bowl Shape: Elongated bowls offer more seating space and comfort; square or round shapes can suit compact designs.
- Bowl height: Comfort height (17–19") makes sitting/standing easier—especially useful for taller people or those with mobility issues. Standard height (15–17") works for general use.
- Trapway style: Skirted trapways hide the curve of the pipe, giving a smoother look and easier cleaning.
- Seat features: Soft-close and quick-release seats mean no slammed lids and easier cleaning.
- Flush Plate: Used for back-to-wall and wall mounted toilet styles. If you’re looking at a wall-mounted toilet style, you may need to purchase a flush plate separately. We offer many beautiful styles.
- Tankless / Smart Flush: Advanced systems with remote, sensor, or automatic flush options—great for hands-free convenience.
Other Toilet Features
- Quick-Release Seats: Quieter and easier cleaning.
- Soft-Close Seats: Closes your toilet seat quietly, without a bang or slam.
- Pre-Wash / Night Lights: Some smart models rinse before use, and night lights help in low light.
- Adjustable Spray & Dryers: In smart toilets, you can customize spray pressure, temperature, and drying for comfort.
- Touchless Flush: Flush with a wave of a hand!
