Types of Toilets and How to Choose One
There are many different factors that go into purchasing a bathtub. With so many types of bathtubs and styles, it can be difficult to choose one. Below is a list of important information you can use to help pick the best bathtub for your needs.
Types of Bathtubs:
There are multiple different types of bathtubs. They range from alcove tubs to freestanding tubs, and everything in-between. Below we break down what each type of bathtub is so you can decide what installation type is best for your bathroom.
-
Alcove Bathtub
Alcove bathtubs are the most common type of bathtub found in the US. This bathtub is installed into a 3-wall alcove, which means only the front side of the bathtub is accessible. These models are not reversible due to their integral tile flange, so it is important you select a tub with the proper drain location to match your existing plumbing. There are two types of alcove bathtubs; one with a built-in apron and one without. An alcove bathtub that does not include a built-in apron requires that one be built to cover the exposed side of the tub.
-
Drop-In Bathtub
Drop-in bathtubs are designed to fit inside of a 4 wall frame. Since no sides of the bathtub are exposed, these tubs do not have front aprons, nor do they have integral tile flanges. This makes drop-in bathtubs reversible, so you do not need to specify a left-hand or right-hand drain. You should consult with a plumber for information on supplementing the tile flange with plumber’s tape. One added benefit for drop-in bathtubs is that they are installed further away from the wall than an alcove tub, which provides a larger ledge for decor and bath products.
-
Corner Bathtub
Corner bathtubs are similar to alcove bathtubs. Both bathtub types have integral tile flanges and may come with an apron. The difference is that a corner bathtub also has an additional side of the bathtub exposed and accessible, therefore only needing 2 available walls for installation instead of 3. Corner tubs come in both a left and right hand drain variation, so it is important to select a tub with the proper drain location to match your existing plumbing.
-
Freestanding Bathtub
Freestanding bathtubs are finished on all sides, and are installed unattached to any walls. These tubs can be useful for customers designing a large bathroom or an open concept bathroom. When installing a freestanding bathtub, it is important to ensure that the tub is level and to use silicone to seal around the bottom outline of the tub. There are different installation method options for installing a freestanding bathtub. The drain outlet for most Swiss Madison freestanding tubs connects to the floor, while some models may offer the option of connecting the drain outlet to the wall. There are varying styles of freestanding bathtubs as well, including flat bottom and clawfoot tubs.

Walk-In Bathtub
Walk in bathtubs are an ideal choice for those with mobility issues. This style of bathtub has a door embedded into the tub wall, so users do not have to step over any sort of wall. These tubs also typically include a built-in seat, to help assist elderly persons or those with mobility issues.
Bathtub Basics
There are a number of things to consider when deciding on which bathtub is perfect for your home. Here are some common technical phrases that you should know when looking for a new tub.

Drain Location
If you are replacing an existing bathtub or using previously installed plumbing, it is extremely important to purchase a new bathtub with the proper drain location that matches the existing plumbing location. While some types of bathtubs have a reversible drain location so the tub can be installed in either direction, other bathtub types can only be installed in one direction due to the flange location. Swiss Madison offers bathtubs with drain locations in the left, right, and center of the tub floor.
Bathtub Height
The height of the bathtub refers to the full measurement of the tub from the floor to the top of the wall. This is important as some customers with young children or mobility issues may prefer a bathtub with a lower height for easier access.
Soaking Depth
Soaking depth is the measurement from the deepest point of the tub up to the overflow cover. Customers that prefer relaxing in a bath may want a deeper soaking depth for their tub, whereas the soaking depth may not be as important for customers that only shower. If you have a primary need for a deep soaking depth, a soaking bathtub is a good option.
Bathtub Features
Swiss Madison offers additional features to help customers enjoy a more comfortable bathtub experience. We have included a list of some of our feature offerings below.

The result is a more ergonomic, relaxing soak that reduces strain on the shoulders, neck, and upper body.
Slip-Resistant Floor
The slip-resistant floor feature provides a textured surface on the inner floor of the bathtub. This feature removes the necessity for a bathmat on the tub floor.
